Frequently Asked Questions:

Why does my email program halt or stop downloading messages?

This problem usually happens when you receive an e-mail message that is too large to download. If your client stops receiving or halts during message transfers, go to www.dakota.net and choose the ACCESS YOUR EMAIL link. Enter your username and password in form to access your email. Once there, read through the message list there and look at the SIZE on the left of each message. Messages that are over 1,000,000 in size may take a while to download or may not download at all. It may be necessary to DELETE these messages then try downloading your mail again.

Why does it take 3 or more tries before I can get a successful connection to Dakota.net?

This issue is usually related to outdated modem drivers. The first thing to do is update your drivers. To do this go to your modem manufacturer's web site and search for the newest driver software. (Keep in mind, even if you have a new modem, the software that came with it may not be current. It is always a good idea to update your drivers and keep them current.)

Why do I frequently get disconnected from Dakota.net?

There are 2 probable answers to this:

Do you have call waiting? If so, disable it temporarily by putting a *70, front of the dialup number. You can also do this in the DIALING PROPERTIES for your modem. Click the start button, then settings, then control panel. From there double click the MODEMS control panel. In the modem properties box click DIALING PROPERTIES button and check the box marked "To disable call waiting dial:" and enter *70, in the box to the right.

If call waiting isn't the issue, you should update your modem drivers. Go to your specific modem manufacturers web site and download the newest software and drivers for your modem.

Why do I only connect at speeds around 33.6 or 28.8 even though I have a 56K modem?

This is a common problem among older 56K modems and even some newer ones. A common fix for this problem is downloading the newest drivers and software from your specific modem manufacturer's web site. The 56k standard has changed many times over the past year and if you have never updated your modem drivers, now is a great time.

This problem can also relate to the telephone lines you are using. This can be an issue both inside and outside your home. If your lines are dated in your home or your section of town its possible this could be the cause of the slower connection rate. Contact your telephone provider for a resolution to this issue.
